PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN ONLINE

How can we as parents and teachers protect our children from the dangers of social media (primarily cyberbullying, threats, sending/receiving sexual materials, sexual solicitations)? Experts say that the best way we can help reduce these dangers is by talking to our children about making safe, responsible decisions (along with excellent filters on our devices). There are 3 primary risks that we need to discuss with our children:
Inappropriate conduct: The online world can feel anonymous. Kids sometimes forget that they are still accountable for their actions.
Inappropriate contact: Some people online have bad intentions, including bullies, predators, hackers, and scammers.
Inappropriate content: The online world is filled with pornography, violence, or hate speech online. Teaching our children to be discerning and wise in their viewing is critical. There are several excellent websites that I would like to suggest as resources for parents and teachers to use in their discussion with children: https://staysafeonline.org/, www.safesurfingkids.com/, www.screenfree.org, www.fightthenewdrug.com.
It is my prayer that as we discuss these important risks, God will give us wisdom and understanding to teach our children how they can experience freedom and peace in their social relationships online.

10 Ways to Extend Your Digital Reach

1. Use Internet filtering software on your computers.
2. Use parental controls on your computer and tablets.
3. Know your child’s privacy settings on social media sites.
4. Spend time together with your child online.
5. Sign an Internet safety agreement with your child
6. Teach your child to never give out personal information.
7. Explain why your child shouldn’t chat with anyone he or she doesn’t know.
8. Discuss the appropriate use of the Internet with your children.
9. Show your child what to do if he or she stumbles onto inappropriate sites.
10. Frequently check your child’s digital footprint.

UPCOMING SEMINARS AT U OF C ON THE IMPACT OF GAMING AND SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUTH:

The negative effects of excessive gaming, social media and technology use are well documented. But one group is especially at risk - teenagers. Addiction is a real danger as adolescent brains are most susceptible to the chemical overload that comes with continued screen overuse. Video game addiction is real. A tsunami is coming that parents, educators and health professionals are not prepared for. On January 22, 2019, from 7 - 9 pm, Cam Adair (leading expert and pioneer on video game addiction) will be presenting an evening on “How Gaming and Social Media are Designed to Keep Teenagers Hooked” at the University of Calgary. Then on January 23, 2019, from 10 am - 4 pm Cam Adair will be presenting a workshop "Video Game Addiction Masterclass” at the University of Calgary. Registration opens November 26. To register or learn more information, go to the Sinneave Family Foundation at www.sinneavefoundation.org.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CHAPLAIN...

Dear Chinook Family,
In Isaiah 41:10 we read “Fear not, for I am with you;  Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
I know all of us face moments of uncertainty that cause doubt, fear and stress to take over.  That’s why I often come back to this verse that reminds me that although life has it’s challenges God promises that He will strengthen, help, and hold us with His righteous right hand.
I encourage you to lead your family to daily seek our precious Lord for His peace and guidance.  As we do we will learn to not fear, but to trust Him to guide us through life's moments.
 God bless and keep you.
In Christ,
Paul Antunes

Your Brother in Christ,
Paul

Pr. Paul Antunes has personal music CD’s for sale (20$), with each CD sold 50% of the proceeds will support the Mission Trip.  To purchase a CD please contact  Pastor Paul at pantunes@cwaa.net, or call him at 403-286-5686 or find him at the school.
